I was scheduled to be induced on Wednesday July 15th. I was told to be at the hospital by 7am so Devin and I left the house around 6. Since I was concerned that I may have a C-section, I didn't want to eat anything but that didn't stop Devin. Nope-he went thru the drive thru at McDonalds and purchased an egg-mcmuffin. How cruel! We arrived at the hospital, checked in , and waited. The nurse didn't want to start the actual induction until the Dr. ordered it so she just began an IV. At 9-my doctor came in, checked me, ordered the pitocin, and broke my water at 9:09am. The contractions began to get stronger, longer, and more frequent. I decided around 11 that I wanted an epidural and was afraid if I didn't get one now-I may be too late. Since my blood pressure is always so low (Devin claims that I have no heart) they had to slowly give me the epidural. It also took some time since my hips/back is uneven. After the fact I'm thinking I'm uneven thanks to me cracking my back 20 years ago---oops, telling them that may have helped. After what seemed like forever---the epidural began to work and just in time. The next time I was checked--I was ready to go. I was wheeled into the OR (just in case I needed to have a Csection) and was a little overwhelmed by the busyness of the operating room. So many people and a ton of equipment. The doctor was getting ready and I was prepped---the doctor checked and I was ready to push. Unfortunately the room wasn't quite ready for the delivery. The doctor's stool was missing, my bed wasn't plugged in so I couldn't be positioned properly and my legs were almost at a 90 degree angle with my face (and butt) facing the heavens. (Dr. Hall was NOT happy) I pushed 3 times and at 12:45pm Sierra Emerald was born. She came in at 6lbs7oz and 18 inches long. I was able to hold her briefly before they took her away and I was ready to deliver baby B. Again I pushed 3 times and at 12:49pm Sierra Diamond was born. She came in at 6lbs6 oz and 18.25 inches long. I held her briefly as well and she was whisked away into another room. While laying on the bed unable to move-I just laid there trying to make sure the babies were alright and coming to terms I was now a mother to twins. TWINS!!!!!!! Both babies were able to breathe on their own-they just had minor issues with keeping their body heat up.
Sierra was born with a nasty-thick coating on her. I've never had a baby covered like this. Kinda gross-yet she was still cute. She cried for maybe a couple of seconds and was so quiet. She was so quiet I kept asking the nurses if she was alright.
Sienna was covered in blood-pretty nasty too-but again, cute. She came out screaming and continued to cry for a while. Since she was in another room--we didn't get a lot of photos of her.

My face pretty much says it all---"Holy Crap, TWINS. What do I do???? |
The first night at the hospital was ok. Devin stayed to help me which was nice. Sierra was a lazy eater and didn't want to nurse. Sienna was eager to nurse. It never fails-whenever we are in the hospital to have a baby, so is everyone else. There wasn't an actual room available-so we stayed in the labor/delivery room. We were finally transferred to an actual room the following afternoon. The second night was more difficult. My boobs were sore-I was exhausted, and everything hurt. The night nurse I had was a sweetheart and so helpful. Around 2:30/3:00 she came in while both babies were screaming and I was in tears. She offered to take them to the nursery for a little bit so I could get some much needed rest.
The next day we were told that both babies had lost quite a bit of their birth weight---one was 10% and the other was 11%-which meant the doctor almost didn't allow the babies to leave. We had to begin supplementing formula immediately. Checking out was interesting. Since they were so busy and we had twins--all the paperwork was messed up and it took over 4 hrs to get everything corrected and the ok to leave. The nurse felt so bad that she sent us home with 4 packages of diapers and a bunch of formula and bottles.
Below are the babies in their coming home outfits. The photo is blurry because I had Devin pack the camera and I realised I forgot to get a photo. So this was taken with the cell phone.
